COMET
Software pack for designing structural steel joints

The COMET software pack is intended for analysis and design of structural steel joints used in industrial and civil engineering. The application implements an approach which use a set of parametric designs of joint units (prototypes) to design a particular joint. In the course of designing, prototype parameters are changed depending upon specific conditions of their application (loads, material etc.) and design regulations to be complied with.

Using the application enables you to choose:
– regulations for your design (SNiP, Eurocode or other) which a structure must comply with;
– assortment of rolled steel (CIS, Euronorm etc.) out of which joint elements are selected;
– units of measurement (cm or inches, kilograms or newtons etc.) used to specify source data and to describe the results;
– language (Russian, English, French) in which users want to work and document their results.

The pack is implemented as a wide range of applications to design various joints of structural steel elements.

The principal task performed by the COMET pack is to obtain a structural concept for a joint which would comply with a selected variant of design regulations and meets usage conditions specified. The result of its work is a drawing of the joint and reference data on strength of its particular elements (parts, welds, bolts etc.). The data mentioned enable the user to assess the quality of the structural concept obtained and, if needed, to change some of the structure’s parameters. It is the purpose of implementing such a capability on reworking the design obtained and changing the drawing representation format (dimensioning conventions, legend, notation, other formats) which was the reason to implement the ability of exporting graphical results of the COMET pack work to DXF files of the AutoCAD system. Certainly, users may skip the reworking phase and use the structural concept of COMET as a final version.

The version being proposed includes various joint prototypes, such as:
– rigid, hinged and semi-rigid connections of beams and columns;
– pin ends of columns;
– non-hinged ends of columns without ribs, with ribs, and with crossbars;
– bolted beam junctions and flange connections;

Connections of I-beams to a column are implemented as welded or flange connections using ordinary or high-strength bolts.

Connections can be horizontal or slanted, haunched or haunchless, allowing for a column reinforcing or without a reinforcing.

A wide range of patands for centrally or eccentrically compressed plate columns enables you not only design quickly any necessary joint but also obtain a rational structural concept for your project.

Prototypes of beam joints included in the pack enable you to analyze and design a high-strength bolted joint which would use covers or flanges, reinforced or not reinforced, either in the same plane or abutting.

A developed Help system will be of use to master the application and to assist in everyday work with it.
